Types of Boat Licences
In Spain, there are different types of boat licences depending on the type of boat and the distance you can sail from the coast. Each of these licences requires a specific medical examination.
Basic Navigation Skipper (PNB)
This licence allows you to operate vessels up to 8 metres in length if they are motor boats, and up to 7.5 metres if they are sailboats, up to 5 miles from the coast. The medical examination for this licence assesses general physical and mental health, including vision, hearing, and coordination.
Recreational Boats Skipper (PER)
This licence allows you to operate vessels up to 15 metres in length up to 12 miles from the coast and between islands in the case of archipelagos. The medical examination for this licence is similar to that of the PNB, but with additional controls to ensure the ability to drive at greater distances from the coast.
Patrón de Yate
With this licence, vessels up to 24 metres in length can be operated with no mileage limit. This medical examination is more rigorous, given the additional responsibilities associated with sailing at distant distances from the coast.
Yacht Captain
This licence allows you to operate any type of vessel without restrictions. The medical examination for this licence is the most exhaustive, given the complexity and responsibilities of handling large vessels and/or at long distances from the coast.

It is essential to ensure that the applicant has no mental health problems that could interfere with the safe operation of a vessel. This includes assessment for possible behavioural disorders, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.
