Procurement and renewal
To obtain or renew any type of driving licence, an assessment of vision and hearing, a coordination test and an assessment of reaction ability are carried out. A medical history is also reviewed and an interview is conducted to detect possible health problems that could affect driving ability.
To obtain this type of licence, a mental health assessment is required to ensure that there are no disorders that could pose a risk. General physical health, eyesight and hearing are also examined. In some cases, a coordination test may be required.

To recover points on a driver’s licence, you normally need a certificate proving that you have completed a points recovery course. This certificate is normally obtained after completing a specific course, not through a medical examination.
Exchange of driving licences from other countries that have an agreement with Spain
The exchange of driving licences is a procedure that allows holders of driving licences obtained in foreign countries, but which have reciprocity agreements with Spain, to obtain a Spanish driving licence without having to go through the normal acquisition process. This is especially useful for those who have moved to Spain and plan to reside permanently or on a long-term basis.
It is worth mentioning that not all countries have reciprocity agreements with Spain. European Union and European Economic Area countries are automatically included, and there are also agreements with several other countries, including but not limited to some Latin American, African and Asian nations.
The process for exchanging permits generally involves the following steps:
Make an appointment at the nearest Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico.
Present the required documentation. This may include: the original driving licence, an official translation if the licence is not in Spanish, a residence permit, the DNI or passport, and proof of residence.
Pass a medical examination at an authorised centre.
Pay the corresponding fee.
Once the documentation has been checked and accepted, and the medical examination has been passed, the Traffic Department (DGT) will issue a Spanish driving licence.
It is important to note that the exact details and requirements may vary, so people interested in exchanging licences are advised to check the latest information on the DGT website or contact their nearest Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico.
